Riding food

An issue I had last year a couple of times was having food to eat while racing that was easy to get out of my jersey pocket, and actually easy to eat while breathing hard. Having food to eat on a long training ride is one thing, but getting calories in while racing is another. I've discovered through the years that gels in a gel flask work really well for keeping feuled up in races, but sometimes you need something a little more substancial.

I've been hearing about Allen Lim's rice cakes for a couple of years, and yesterday I found the youtube video that shows how to make them. Coatney and me made up a batch to try out. They're pretty easy to make and easy to eat. Tasty too. We also made some homemade power bar type things as well. The recipie is in the latest Velo News.
One issue I've always had with taking along homemade stuff to eat was how to unwrap the item easily while riding. The way Allen Lim shows how to wrap the rice cakes in foil makes it a lot easier to get into while riding. I tried it out yesterday and it works well.
These are the rice cakes. Just waiting to be cut up and wrapped.

These are the homemade power bars. We used penut butter, honey, pecans, choclate chips, craisins, and Kashi puffed rice cereal.

Cabin Fever

I've been stuck inside the last 2 days other than shoveling the driveway some. I shoveled for about an hour and a half yesterday. Only got about 30% done.  Luckily, this week was scheduled as a recovery week, so it worked out well with the snow storm. The only problem is, I started feeling like I was getting sick on Monday. Sure enough, I woke up last night feeling a cold coming on.

I've been trying to take it easy today, but I'm getting restless just sitting around. I decided to take a quick spin on the CX bike around the neighborhood.
Checking out the roads around my house. I'm also testing out the ability to post on here using my phone.
The roads aren't too bad, but definitely some big drifts. Your best bet is to stay in the tire track ruts. I had to resist the urge to go mountain bike riding at Bluff Creek with some friends. Sounds like fun, but I'm trying hard not to get really sick.
